The Goal of this Course
Unfortunately, we cannot promise to make you a great teacher; that can only be accomplished though hard work, experience and, yes, talent. However, this course will provide you with the basic tools you will need for a career in childhood education.
Course Description
Students will learn how to evaluate course books, think about supplementing course materials, and how to plan well-structured lessons.
Teaching - Grammar - Speaking skills - Pronunciation - Listening skills - Reading skills - Writing skills - Vocabulary development - Planning integrated lessons
We will cover the teaching of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and the four skills, looking at a variety of materials, activities, and the theory behind the techniques. Students will have the opportunity to make and develop their own materials and to share these with the group.
- Project work - Arts and Crafts in the ESL classroom - Songs and Games - Music - Drama and Role-play - Creative Writing - Storytelling - Using video - TPR
Expectations
Since this is an intensive course, in which a great deal of material will be covered in a short time, attendance and punctuality are essential. Repeated absences will adversely affect your mark, and may lead to failure.
Moreover, this course has a strong emphasis on interaction and performance. You may be asked - among other things ? to sing, dance, act and, on occasion, to make a fool of yourself. As with anything in life, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.
Finally, relax and have fun.
By the end of the course, students will have a better understanding of how:
- Children learn a second language - To accommodate a variety of learning styles in the classroom - To develop learning strategies and promote learner independence - To evaluate and use ESL materials - To develop materials of their own - To evaluate the progress of their learners - To teach grammar, pronunciation and the four skills - To use a variety of interesting and exciting activities in the classroom, including project work, arts and crafts, storytelling, poetry, etc.
